Admissions Policy

Little Acorns Pre-school operates a waiting list and places are allocated in date of birth order. We require a £10.00 registration fee to place your child's name on our waiting list. This covers our administration costs and includes a free Tshirt when your child starts. Parents wishing to apply for sessions should contact Karen Setchfield on 07587 157595 or 01702 470310.

You will be contacted before your child's intended start, to advise of start date and available sessions.

Parents are welcome to arrange visits to the pre-school with their child for one or more sessions, to meet the staff and to get a general idea of how things operate. This is also a good opportunity to see if Little Acorns is right for you and your child.

Please bring in your child's Birth Certificate to be witnessed by a member of staff.

Settling In

At Little Acorns Pre-school we recognise that when a young child comes into an unfamiliar environment with unfamiliar people and routines around them, he/she will want their parent or carer with them while they explore and familiarise themselves with all the new experiences.

We advise you to stay with your child for the first few sessions while we all get to know each other and your child's confidence grows. When the time is right we would then suggest you leave for a short period of time initially, and then gradually build up until your child is able to stay happy for the whole session.

We recognise that starting at pre-school is not only a big step for your child, but a big step for parents too. If you have any worries please discuss them with a member of staff.

Policy on Uncollected Children

If a child is not collected at the end of the session and no contact can be made with either parent, carer, or any of the emergency numbers on the Registration Form, two senior members of staff will stay with the child. If after 30 minutes the child has still not been collected, a member of staff will notify Social Services, Ofsted Early Years Department and the local Pre-School Learning Alliance. A fee may be charged for payment of staff.

Behaviour Management

We promote good behaviour and encourage each child to have a sense of respect for other children and adults in their environment. Staff provide positive role models and encourage children to take responsibility for their actions and consequences. Pleore see our behaviour management policy for more information.

Child Protection

It is our legal duty under the Child Protection Act 1989 to inform Social Services if we suspect a child is being abused in any way. Please understand that if a child arrives with a bruise or cut it is our duty to ask you about it and record it in our Incident Book and to ask you to sign the Incident Book.

Mobile phones

Little Acorns Pre-school has a telephone landline (01702 470310) and the pre-school has a mobile phone (07587 157595). Staff are not permitted to use their personal mobile phones during session time (see employee handbook). Any visitors, including parents/carers are not permitted to use mobile phones or cameras either in the hall or the garden. If visitors need to make or receive a call on their personal phones, they should go outside the front of the building to do so.

Equal Opportunities Policy

At Little Acorns Pre-school the staff and committee put the individual needs of the children equally, regardless of gender, race or religious background. We aim to work towards the development of each individual child by providing a happy and caring environment. All staff have a mutual respect for each other and their aim is to work together as a team for the benefit of the children in their daily care.

Non-Smoking Policy

Little Acorns Pre-school is a smoke free environment. Please ensure that there is no smoking in any area of the lobby, hall, kitchen, toilets, outside areas including at the front of the building and in the garden. All visitors are required to follow this policy.

Play is a vital part of your child's life. When your child starts pre-school he/she will be doing a lot of "playing". This is how young children learn and come to terms with the world around them. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) seven areas of learning which are: Personal social & emotional, Communication and language, Physical,  Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the world,  and Expressive arts and design.

Your child will be taking part in the following activities:-

We are very fortunate to have an outside area which we use as often as possible (and in all weathers!). We have our water, soil and sand play in the garden, along with physical and creative projects. The children also take part in planting and scientific experiments.

We have a different role play area every week which includes dressing up.

Creative activities include painting, gluing, play dough, foam, chalks and modelling.

We also encourage the children to do cooking....

Incorporated into our sessions are music, ring games, story time, poetry and rhyme.

We also take the children out in small groups to visit shops or to complete a project.

Each child at Little Acorns is assigned a Key Person. Each Key Person closely monitors and records a child's progress, using the Early Years Foundation Stage. Information is stored in a named folder (Learning Journey), which is passed to the parent/carer when the child leaves Little Acorns Pre-school. This folder is for parental information sharing only and contains samples of work, photos and observations of the child at play during their sessions and at home.

Your child's Key Person will make themselves known to you when your child joins the Pre-school.

If you have any concerns or worries about your child, or you would like to find out about his/her progress, or general well being, please feel free to ask your Key Person at any time.

How to Complain

If you are unhappy you should speak to the Key Person or the Supervisor. We have a written complaints policy which you can ask to see.

Settling in Plan

When you and your child first visit the Little Acorns Pre-school, their Key Person will complete a Settling in Plan with you, which contains some details about your child that we feel might help us to help them to settle in. Also goals that you would hope your child will achieve at both pre-school and at home.

Key Persons are responsible for maintaining and completing a record of each childs development (Learning Journey) which are shared with parents.

Please ensure that your child wears suitable clothing and shoes (no flip flops). We use a vast amount of paint and glue on a daily basis and although the children wear aprons, they can still get messy! So please don't send your child in their best clothes.

No necklaces, bracelets or dangly earrings please.
