Lost Child Policy

Prevention steps

Cabin Hall

  • A member of staff stands at the front door into the main hall and another by the brown double doors of the main hall when children exit with their parent/carer.
  • Times are kept of children arriving and leaving.
  • We operate a self registration system and this is checked after arrival time.

Outside Play Area

  • The perimeter fence and gates are checked as part of our daily risk assessment process to ensure they are secure.
  • A minimum of two adults are outside at any one time as per the EYFS ratio‚Äôs.

In the unlikely event of a child becoming lost, the following step by step procedure will be carried out:

  • Ensuring that the remaining children are sufficiently supervised and safe, remaining staff will carry out an initial search of the main hall, toilets, kitchen, office and outside area including the garden room.
  • If after 5 minutes the child cannot be found then the parents/carers will be informed followed immediately by the police.
  • The search will continue opening up into a wider area.

Lost Child Procedure on outings or Forest School sessions

If a child becomes lost on an outing or Forest School session the following step by step procedure will be carried out.

  • Carry out an initial search on the immediate area.
  • Inform members of staff and adults in the group
  • Inform management of venue if practicable
  • Gather the children together to enable more adults to search a wider area.
  • If after 5 minutes the child still cannot be found then parents/carers will be informed followed immediately by the police.

This policy was reviewed and updated by the staff on 23rd September 2016 and approved at a meeting of Little Acorns Pre-school.
