September Newsletter

September - October 2017 Newsletter

Welcome back, and a special welcome to our new children and their families. Our dates this half term are Monday 4th September to Friday 20th October 2015 (Please also note that Little Acorns will be shut on Monday 30th October for a full staff training day).

Please see our outside notice board for our long-term dates, short term plan and details of our weekly activities. Details of our activities, trips, dates, polices and much much more is also on our website www.littleacornsleigh.co.uk. Please let us know if you are not receiving our emails.

Hopefully you have alla copy of our new style Invoice over the summer, which will now also include your voluntary snack donations (and an Arts and Crafts donation for the parents of funded children ONLY). Just for your information this Arts and Craft money also goes towards activities such as play dough and cooking ingredients.  I hope you understand as we can only be as creative as our budget allows.

If you have any natural resources we could use such as cones, sponges etc. we would be very grateful to receive them.

If your child is staying at pre-school all day please don’t forget to send them with a packed lunch.  Please cut grapes, tomatoes and carrot sticks in half, as a child could easily choke on these items. Please avoid Peanut Butter, Nutella, nuts and fish, as we have children with severe allergies to these items.  As we have a number of children who are allergic to nuts, we seek to provide foods for snack which have no trace of nuts or their derivatives.   We urge parents of children with allergies to help us by coming in and checking our food labels to ensure they are safe for their children to eat.

If your child is staying at all day please also send them with a named toilet bag containing their own named toothbrush and toothpaste. In the first two terms at Little Acorns we encourage children to brush their teeth after their midday packed lunch. This is done under the supervision of a staff member and we use this time to discuss good dental hygiene care. In the summer term tooth brushing is exchanged for the application of Sun cream.

Parking near Little Acorns remains a problem. Where possible please can you walk to Pre-school, or park in Highlands Boulevard and walk through the alleyway? Furthermore we have had through the alleyway? Furthermore, we have had complaints from our neighbours, therefore please do not park on the kerbs or over any driveways. As our neighbours are around during the day time and need to be able to get on and off their drives at all times. They have been known to take photographs and report vehicles of concern.

Our Harvest festival will be held at St. Margaret’s Church on Wednesday 11th October at 9.30am. All children and their families and friends are invited to join us – please bring as many as you can – it’s a big church! Please also bring an item of canned or packet food which we will donate to HARP.  Children who usually attend on a Wednesday morning should then be walked back to the Cabin for the remainder of the session.

Please do not send your child to pre-school in their best clothes.  We have paint, messy and water play and go outside every day and your children will get dirty. Please see Anna or Karen if you would like to buy any Little Acorns t-shirts or sweatshirts. (It doesn’t matter if these get dirty); t-shirts cost £5.50 each and sweat shirts £10.00 each.  Please also don't forget to label all your child's clothing, bags and lunch boxes with their name.

We would be really grateful if you could send in a spare set of clothes in your child’s bag in order that we do not run out of clothes to change them into if they get excessively dirty/wet.  Also we advise girls to wear leggings or trousers if they want to use the rope swings in the garden, to avoid rope burns on their legs.

Each child at Little Acorns is given a library book and encouraged to take our books home to read.  This book can also be used as a home–pre-school link to write messages in.  Simply place the book in the pink box situated in the quiet area and your key person or their buddy will read it.If you have any worries or concerns about anything at all please don’t hesitate to speak to your key person or the supervisor in person.

We have a few spare spaces on most afternoons. If you would like your child to attend an extra ad-hoc session, please talk to Anna or Karen. These extra sessions will however need to be agreed for in advance, and paid for on the day please (@£15 per session).

Staff changes

This term I would like to welcome Emma and Wendy our new Staff members as Key-persons to Little Acorns.  They have both come from local settings and we know that they are going to be great assets to our team.

Over the summer we have had some sad news for Little Acorns. Rebekah will be leaving us on 15th September to attend University. She has decided to become a full-time student and is looking to follow a new career path in the future. We really wish her all the best in her studies and know she will succeed in anything she puts her mind towards. Loosing Rebekah will mean though that some children will need to change their Key-person, and we will be talking to all those families individually when Pre-school begins.

Over the summer I have started training to become a Level 3 Forest School Officer. This is a 9-month course and I will need to be assessed during our own Forest School Friday sessions in order to complete my studies.

This month Ann will be starting her studies to gain her Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT). This is a one-year Level 6 course and requires her to also volunteer within a baby unit and primary school. As well as working within the Setting.

Wendy is also start studying this month for her Level 3 in Early Years Education at Southend Adult Community College (SACC).

Date for your diary

This year our December Pantomime Trip will be held on Thursday 7th Dec. to see the 10.00 showing. Therefore, on the morning of Thurs 7th the Pre-school will be CLOSED. However, the setting will be open in the afternoon as usual. A letter with the details of the Pantomime trip will be coming out shortly. This will include details about how you can order tickets and also book a place on the coach if you would like to attend.

Advanced Notice. We will be holding a bag-to-school day again after half term. Please don’t forget to keep hold of any old clothes / shoes / coats / belts / hats etc. The week following half term we will be asking you to bring them in, in a black bag, and these items will then be sent abroad to underprivileged others. Little Acorns will receive payment for the total weight of items donated.

Finally, can you spare an hour, a morning or afternoon to help out at Little Acorns. Please talk to Anna or Karen

Best Wishes,

Anna Woodcock (Supervisor)
